How to Perform Wudu: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide
Wudhu (الوضوء) is the ritual purification required before performing Salah, touching the Quran, and other acts of worship. Allah says in the Quran:
"O you who believe! When you intend to offer Salah, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles."— Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:6)
The Obligatory Acts (Fara'id) of Wudu
These six acts are compulsory. If any one of them is left out, the Wudu is not valid:
- Washing the face — from the hairline to the chin, and from earlobe to earlobe
- Washing both arms — including the hands, up to and including the elbows
- Wiping (Masah) of the head — at least one-quarter of the head
- Washing both feet — up to and including the ankles
- Tartib (order) — performing the acts in the correct sequence
- Muwalat (continuity) — not allowing the previously washed limb to dry before moving to the next
The Sunnah Acts of Wudu
Performing these Sunnah acts completes the Wudu and earns additional reward:
- Begin with Bismillah
- Make Niyyah (intention) in the heart
- Wash both hands up to the wrists three times
- Rinse the mouth (Madmadah) three times
- Rinse the nose (Istinshaq) three times — using the right hand to pour water and the left to clean
- Wash each limb three times
- Wipe the full head once — starting from the front hairline to the back of the neck
- Wipe the inside and outside of both ears with the index fingers and thumbs
- Wipe the back of the neck (not the throat)
- Wash the right limb before the left throughout
Step-by-Step Method
Step 1: Intention and Bismillah
Say "Bismillah" and make the intention in your heart to perform Wudu for the sake of Allah.
Step 2: Wash Both Hands
Wash both hands up to the wrists three times, making sure water reaches between the fingers.
Step 3: Rinse the Mouth
Take water into the mouth and rinse thoroughly three times. Use the miswak or toothbrush if available.
Step 4: Clean the Nose
Sniff water into the nose with the right hand and blow it out with the left, three times.
Step 5: Wash the Face
Wash the entire face three times — from the top of the forehead to the bottom of the chin, and from earlobe to earlobe.
Step 6: Wash the Arms
Wash the right arm three times from the fingertips to and including the elbow. Repeat for the left arm.
Step 7: Wipe the Head
Wet both hands and pass them over the head once — from the front hairline to the back of the neck and back again.
Step 8: Wipe the Ears
Insert the index fingers into the ears and wipe the outside with the thumbs.
Step 9: Wash the Feet
Wash the right foot three times up to and including the ankle, making sure water reaches between the toes. Repeat for the left foot.
Step 10: Dua After Wudu
After completing Wudu, recite:
"Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illallahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh."
What Breaks Wudu?
The following actions invalidate Wudu and require it to be renewed before Salah:
- Passing wind, urine, or stool
- Deep sleep (lying down or leaning against something)
- Loss of consciousness or fainting
- Flowing blood or pus from the body
- Vomiting a mouthful
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not washing between the fingers and toes
- Leaving dry patches on any limb
- Wiping the head with only one or two fingers (must cover at least a quarter)
- Breaking the continuity (allowing limbs to dry before completing Wudu)
Conclusion
Wudu is the key to Salah and a great act of worship in itself. The Prophet ﷺ said: "No one maintains Wudu except a believer." (Ibn Majah). Make it a habit to perform Wudu with care, following the Sunnah method, and you will find that your Salah becomes more focused and meaningful.
